Counselling is a way of helping young people with different personal problems. Counsellors work with a wide range of concerns including anxiety, depression, bereavement, bullying, loneliness, self-esteem, difficulties in relationships, self-injury, eating problems and many other issues.
It is based on the building of a trusting relationship between the counsellor and the client and it can enable people to talk about experiences and to make sense of them. Counselling can also allow people to express difficult feelings and learn how to manage them in a different way.
Counsellors are trained to listen thoughtfully and carefully to people’s problems without judging or criticising them. They do not give advice but support clients to enable them to make positive decisions and positive changes to how they deal with problems.
Confidentiality is about offering someone a safe space to talk about what is going on for them, knowing that as a general rule the counsellor will not share what is said in counselling with anyone else.
There are certain circumstances when confidentiality may need to be broken. Confidentiality will be broken where there is the threat of an act of terrorism or drug trafficking. It may also be broken if the counsellor thinks the young person or someone else is at serious risk of being harmed or is being harmed by someone else, or, if the young person is threatening suicide. However the breaking of confidentiality is very rare.
The counsellor will, where possible, tell the young person if they feel it is necessary to break confidentiality, discussing why they feel confidentiality needs to be broken.

Counselling Assessment
Do not be put off by the sound of this. An assessment is just a chance for you to find out what counselling is about and what we can offer and also for us to understand the issues that are troubling you. The assessment usually takes around 45 minutes and is generally undertaken on a 1-2-1 basis. However, if you would prefer someone to come with you for the assessment this can be arranged.
Once we have your details we will contact you to arrange an assessment at the place and time best suited to you. If you are under the age of 13 we will require parental consent, and a form will be need to be completed by your parent or carer before we can arrange an assessment.

Once you have had your assessment, your details will be put on the waiting list and you will be contacted as soon as a counsellor is available and we can arrange sessions for you.
During the first counselling session your counsellor will discuss a verbal contract (a spoken agreement) with you and this will include
Length of sessions and where and how often sessions are held
