The Wellingborough anti social behaviour project was launched in October 2008, the aim of the project was to engage young people in positive activities and informally educate them in a bid to reduce ASB. The project was launched in partnership with Northamptonshire police who identified target areas that the Service Six team would focus their efforts on, these areas included the Kingsway, Queensway and Hemmingwell estates and more recently the Redwell estate.
Service Six staff go into the indentified areas and approach young people to find out what they would like to see happen in their area. During the first six months of the project the Service six team came into contact with over 300 individual young people, with many of them participating in one or more positive activities and events. During this time period (October 2008 till March 2009) Service Six contributed to a 30% decrease in anti social behaviour over these identified areas.
Due to the great success of the initial six month project, in March 2009 Service Six secured funding to continue the project for a further year.
Some of the activities that we have planned and delivered to young people in their areas have included:
- Professional accredited football coaching programs.
- Dance classes.
- Personal safety and awareness training.
- Professional cricket coaching.
- Roller Skating and BMXing projects.
- Basketball tournaments.
- Indoor five-a-side football session.
- Arts and craft projects.
- Sponsored events such as swimming, running and walking.
- Community volunteering projects.
- Graffiti workshops.
- Girls only party nights.
- Trips to skate parks.
- Trips to paintballing.
- Trips to ice skating.
- Trips to theme parks.
All of the above have been identified by the young people as activities that they wish partake in and we look forward to running many more activities in the future.
